May 22, 2008 A first of many

When you take two teenagers, give them wood working tools, bikes and a sunny day, riding happens. But when you take 2 inspired teenagers, rain them out and give them nothing better to do, progress happens.

May 22, 2008

Today was a first of what I see as many more to come, the clouds were gray and rain drizzled from the sky. The local hill was closed and riding seemed to be out of the option. Klink and I had an idea, but first we were going to have to test it out. We want to someday build a pedal from scratch, but it would be a waste to buy aluminum for the prototype, so we tried building a pedal out of wood this afternoon.

Here's what we got:

2064683

2064677

For the next pedal we are going to cut the width down by about 1.5 cm, we will make the pins taller and pointier, and make larger spaces in bettween each pyramid. Once we get it right we are going to purchase some aluminum and make a couple pedals.

Hopefully someday we might be able to sell some custom pedals to you!
Recommendations Appreciated!

The work continues!
A new day, a new pedal!

With the information gathered from my last pedal, I discovered that the pins needed to be taller and there had to be more space between them. So I sliced off another blank, redrew the pedal with the required dimensions and started once again.

Halfway done on side of teeth, with a side by side comparison between the old and the new, with an axle laying in the foreground.

2067811
Halfway done the full pedal

2067810

2067808

2067807
Fully completed and mounted on the bike.

When testing these pedals I did a side-by-side comparison between these pedals and Axiom Road Gap Flat pedals. The wooden pedals surprisingly had more grip then the metal pedals and provided better support for my shoe. Again, recommendations appreciated!

Note: I was wearing trail running shoes and the grip was excellent.

This is just the prototype. In reality we will use al, which will not break at all... See that is one of the benefits of the aluminum spikes because you will not constantly break off pins in your pedals. These are soo much stronger.

hey I actually have plans and everything drwan up for my own set. I'm building the pedal body and little spikes out of titanium and building my own pedal spindle. I have designed a new sealed bearing setup with the spindle so that its stronger and more wear resistant. so pedal body and spikes are made out of titanium and the pindle is made out of hardened stainless steel(titanium sheers to easily but steel can bend a bit before it breaks). by the way i work in a metal shop evryday with 100,000 dollar machines so they should come out lokking real nice

Brooklyn Machine Work's already make an extremaly similar pedal to this. But hope fully you can make your's lighter than 800g and grippier than their 500g version.
